Virgin Mobile Prepaid Cell Phones

Virgin Mobile prepaid plans are either pay by the minute or bundles by the month. If you pay by the minute it is simply 18¢ per minute and 5¢ per text sent or received. To maintain service you must top up at least once every 90 days and the minimum top up value is $20. Otherwise the service will expire and you lose any existing credits. If you use your phone more than a few minutes per day, it will be cheaper to sign up for a monthly bundle.

Virgin Mobile Bundles include a certain number of anytime and night/weekend minutes for a low fixed monthly price. However there's no contract so you can change or discontinue the plan. The more expensive plans include more minutes and can also include unlimited night/weekend minutes. Nights are 7 PM to 7 AM which is better than most other networks where nights don't begin until 9. Text Messages are 5¢ to send/receive, but text bundles are also available which can reduce the price to 1¢ each. Picture messages are 25¢ sent/received. The interesting feature of these bundles is how overage minutes are charged. If you go over the allotted minutes, you are charged 18¢ per minute, but you pay for overages in 25 minute blocks. So if you go over by 1 minute, you'll pay $4.50 extra.
